o r o g e n e t i c s

location: berlin 2008

From May to August I lived in Berlin. First out in deep Neu Koeln on Niemetzstrasse and later on Leuschnerdamm in Kreuzberg.

During this time I had the chance to meet spend some time with a wide range of folks such as: Monica Glahn, Mike Hentz, Werner Durand, Rinus Van Alebeek, Jason Honea, Ben Owen, Melanie Velarde, Marcel Türkowsky, Marko Kosnik, Gerard Couty, Mandjao Fati, Benjamin Laurent Aman, Sean Bennet, and many more…

Due to my freshness back from India, as well as a growing fatigue with the ‘sound-art, field recording, blah blah’ boy’s club – I found myself more often out along the Landwehrkanal or in someone’s home – playing my shakuhachi through low-fi speakers and ‘getting back to basics’ as it were. Simply put, having a fun time learning to play and to improvise with others – again – without any preconceived notion of what I was trying to do. As it was some 15 years ago. A refreshing step back…

During this process and finding myself located among the Berlin underground noise scene – I found it curiously funny how ‘flute playing’ can be considered a ‘disturbing feature’ among these rather uptight folks – so moving further along these lines I organized a meeting (inspired by the idea of Magnus Shaefer) of flute players in the pedestrian tunnels under the column in the middle of the Tiergarten.

Some flute sounds from these ‘stochastic’ sessions:

With Jason, Melanie and others we had a series of recording sessions and one performance under the moniker of ‘The Shitty Listener’.

Melanie and I began a series of sessions and practices which culminated in a performance at the Alberto Ukebana dance studio.

Some pictures of this nice summer.

Future seeds of work were planted with Marcel Türkowsky as well as Benjamin Laurent Aman.

There were also other projects such as the curious event out in Loitz (due to be a report in and of itself) – as well as a lovely weekend at the Goldmund Festival where I made a special mix and installation in a sauna by a lake.

Perhaps I might find myself once again in Berlin in the summer of 2009?

Will see…
